Collaboration in education: the universities of Russia join to improve the quality of education in the regions

This year the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education put forward an initiative on holding a contest among Russian regional universities to develop advanced educational programs of higher education together with the Russian universities included in TOP 200 World University Rankings by subject. Totally 30 universities won the contest. The operator of the contest was Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University was among the winners. NMSTU will receive the funding to introduce and develop its educational program on metallurgy. The leading university in the project will be the National University of Science and Technology MISIS – the top Russian university in 2019 according to Forbes Russia. It is also included in TOP 100 universities of the QS World University Ranking by material science. Besides, the program will be developed jointly with specialists of our industrial partner – PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works.

NMSTU will receive RUB 10 m to develop and introduce the advanced educational program of higher education, including the involvement of the research and teaching staff of MISIS. The allocated funds will be also directed to purchase required equipment.

Mikhail Chukin, Rector of NMSTU, believes that the collaboration in education is important not only for the university, but also for the region in general.

“The introduction of such program serves the interests of all the parties: both NMSTU and MISIS, and PJSC MMK, our major strategic partner. Regarding the universities, development and introduction of the advanced educational program always means success, as we train specialists highly sought on the labor market not only today, but also tomorrow, which is important in our rapidly changing world. It is important to realize that such specialists will be highly sought everywhere: not only in our city, but also far beyond it. The interests of the works are also clear: a new program will comply with actual working industrial conditions; in the course of their studies new specialists of the metallurgical sector will have a practical training at the Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works, contributing to maximum efficiency of the training.”

The project is designed to be implemented for a period of two years. Already by 2019 a prototype of the advanced educational program will be developed, and the NMSTU research and teaching staff will undergo further training. The educational program for students is planned to be started up at the flagship university in September of 2021.

The experts think that creation of a new educational product is an important step on the road to transformations of all majors in regional universities. This collaboration with leading Russian universities will contribute to the introduction of high quality educational programs, meeting the needs of representatives of the real economy and global trends in science and technology.
