Joint development of researchers of NMSTU and metallurgists contributes to high-tech production

NMSTU presented a project on production of import-substituting cryogenic steel grades. The presentation was made at Russian exhibition VUZPROMEXPO-2019.

Annually leading Russian universities and companies leading in domestic economy take part in this major event. A team of the flagship university and PJSC MMK presented their results and features of a comprehensive project under implementation: “Development and introduction of innovative production of nanostructured steel plates resistant to ultra-low temperatures for the import substitution of materials, including cryogenic ones used at ultra-low critical temperatures, higher corrosiveness and in the Arctic climate”.

New developments and commercial implementation of the production of innovative types of steel rolled products support the key priorities and the national projects related to a new defense policy, development of military and civil infrastructure in regions of the Far North and in corrosive environment and severe operation conditions,” explained Oleg Tulupov, Vice Rector for Research and Innovation, NMSTU.

One of the most significant results was commercial implementation of high-tech production of plates from cryogenic steel grade MAGSTRONG CRYOGENIC 0H9.

A unique set of steel properties allows us to apply plates in manufacturing tankers and storage tanks for liquefied gases, railway tank cars, parts of cryogenic equipment, parts of heat exchangers, gas separation plants and other facilities of a strategic application operated at -195°C,” commented Alexander Gulin, junior researcher of the NMSTU Engineering Center.

The project implementation is supported by state funds. MMK won in an open contest conducted by the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation for the selection of companies entitled to receive subsidies to implement comprehensive projects aimed at development of high-tech production with Russian universities.
