Another Landmark of Magnitogorsk Unveiled at NMSTU

On July 12th, the University Garden of Nosov Magnitogorsk State Technical University witnessed a milestone event of unveiling the sculpture “Armour Bureau”.

The composition consists of sculptures of those legendary personalities who made the city of Magnitogorsk and Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works famous as the “steel heart” of Russia. They include the legendary people’s director of Magnitogorsk Iron & Steel Works Grigory Nosov, Chief of Rolling Sector within the Armour Bureau Mikhail Boyarshinov and Deputy Mechanical Superintendent of MMK Nikolay Ryzhenko. In the dreadful year of 1941 MMK’s Armour Bureau did the impossible: they managed to produce the first armour plates a month after the war had begun.

“Dear friends, today is a special day. We are gathered here to launch a landmark devoted to legendary people. Magnitka has always been at the front line, especially during the hard war years. It has always produced excellent staff, excellent steel. And that Armour Bureau, which was established in the first years of the war, helped set up an armour plate production process at MMK in the shortest timeframe. It was for a reason that Magnitka was chosen to be the place for streamlining that critical production. MMK is a symbol of Magnitogorsk. When both the city and the plant were still under construction, our University joined in. It was established in the 1930s driven by a lofty ambition -– to make it a world class production site employing world class experts and delivering world class products. Till today this is true!” said in his welcoming speech Valery Kolokoltsev, NMSTU’s Rector and a member of the Legislative Assembly of the Chelyabinsk Region.

Sergey Nosov, Grigory Nosov’s grandson and Mayor of Nizhny Tagil, also thanked Valery Kolokoltsev and MMK for this contribution: “Perhaps, it is not the three citizens of Magnitogorsk or the Armour Bureau that we are launching this monument to. I believe this is a monument glorifying Magnitogorsk because this is the actual Magnitogorsk. Steel making, research, creativity…, the latter has always been inherent for Magnitka. That’s why Magnitka still keeps its status.”
