The Magnitogorsk university teacher won gold in China

The Department of Linguistics and Translation of the Institute of Humanities conquered another peak and proved that good quality education in linguistics and teaching opened new professional and research horizons. Roman Smolnikov, a teaching assistant of the Department of Linguistics and Translation, taking an internship in China, won the China International College Students’ “Internet+” Innovation and Entrepreneurship Competition in the Liaoning Province organized by the Ministry of Education of the People’s Republic of China, the Department of Education of the Liaoning Province and Dalian University of Foreign Languages.

The competition included four stages: selection of applicants, submission of papers, selection of top 30 participants for the final and, eventually, online defense of the project, when the participants made presentations and answered questions of the jury. A total of 200 teams from universities all over the province took part in the competition.

Despite tough competition, Roman Smolnikov, supervised by a teacher of Liaoning Institute of Science and Technology, delivered an excellent speech in support of his project. The project in Chinese was aimed at establishing a center of modern Chinese studies in the Russian Federation. To prove a demand for such initiative, Roman showed successful results of the event, “Pearls of the Celestial Empire”, held by the Department of Linguistics and Translation as part of Universum-2023 Festival of Science in Magnitogorsk. This festival, attracting great interest among a wide audience, is included in the list of events devoted to the Decade of Science in the Chelyabinsk Region.

The idea is unique not only because of an integrated approach to challenges faced by modern Chinese studies, but also because of its relevance for two largest projects: the “One Belt – One Road” initiative introduced by Xi Jinping, General Secretary of the Chinese Communist Party, and the initiative aimed at developing a comprehensive cooperation with China proposed by Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation.

The presentation was highly evaluated by the jury and awarded the first place and a gold medal. In the near future, a working group will be established to implement the program. Roman Smolnikov is glad to take part in such competition, hopes for implementation of the project and positively evaluates a chance of speaking about our university and students learning Chinese at NMSTU.
