Commemoration of Gennady S. Gun

Time flies inevitably and now one year since Gennady S. Gun passed away. He was an amazing person, whose name was associated with an epoch in history of NMSTU, history of Russian and global science, an outstanding scientist, a talented organizer, a perfect family man and a wise teacher.

He is, to use the phrase, a national treasure, epoch-making. It is impossible to overestimate the personality of Gennady S. Gun or to mention all his achievements and discoveries. Gennady S. Gun, doctor of engineering sciences, professor, laureate of the State Prize in Science and Engineering, Honored Scientist of the Russian Federation, Honored Cultural Professional of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic, Honored Metallurgist of Russia, devoted his professional life to the university and Magnitogorsk, where his parents were pioneer builders.

Gennady S. Gun started working at NMSTU in 1962, rising from a teaching assistant, associate professor (1969), senior researcher (1980), to professor (1985), since 1987 – the head of the department of materials science, quality and maintenance service of metallurgical and machinery technologies of NMSTU, from 2003 till 2007 he was a Vice Rector for Science at NMSTU and from 2007 till 2020 – Advisor to the Rector.

Gennady S. Gun was an authority on development of new technologies and metal forming, quality and technology assessment. He created a new field in formal logic, qualimetry and control of metal forming processes. He established scientific school of powder metallurgy. Gennady S. Gun paid special attention to the consolidation of researchers and representatives of various metallurgical and machinery companies.

Being an authority on theory and practice of culture and aesthetic education, Gennady S. Gun developed and implemented a unique system of aesthetic education for students of Magnitogorsk Institute of Mining and Metallurgy. He founded and led a chamber orchestra of Magnitogorsk Institute of Mining and Metallurgy, laureate of international, all-Union and all-Russian festivals and competitions. Gennady S. Gun invited the best performance ensembles and masters of the arts of this country to perform on the stage for students and teachers of Magnitogorsk Institute of Mining and Metallurgy and citizens of Magnitogorsk.

Challenging and brilliant ideas of Gennady S. Gun were always put into practice. His research results were widely applied at plants in Russia. His many-sided personality, a width of views, strong character, empathy, wisdom, inexhaustible energy and passion for work and life gave an example for all of us.

Gennady S. Gun, you will be forever in our hearts and memories.
