The Institute's specialists performed more than 200 industrial safety examinations at the hazardous production facilities of PJSC Magnitogorsk Iron and Steel Works: “Rolling Mill Shop No. 8”, "Rolling Mill Shop (coated metal production)", "Rolling Mill Shop No. 5", "Rolling Mill Shop (heavy plate production)", " Rolling Mill Shop No. 4", "Hazardous substances transportation unit", "Main building site of the CHPP", etc. Technical audits of large metallurgical and machine-building enterprises have been carried out: PJSC Chelyabinsk Pipe Rolling Plant, JSC Pervouralsk Novotrubny Plant, JSC Volzhsky Pipe Plant, and JSC Ural Steel. In 2023, the director of the Institute, M.Yu. Narkevich, defended a dissertation for the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences. The dissertation is dedicated to solving an industry-specific scientific and technical problem related to ensuring the advanced development of the quality management system for the operation of hazardous production facilities. This is based on the application of advanced management tools, informatization and digitalization, in accordance with the “Nauka” project: Clause A – Transition to advanced digital, intelligent manufacturing technologies, robotic systems, new materials and design methods, as well as the creation of systems for processing large volumes of data, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Key Activity:

  • Using the surface microtopography, study and develop production processes to make products with specified surface microtopography.

Through obtaining a specified microtopography one can save cost downstream. The results of the Institute’s research benefit steel rolling, automotive, metalware, stamping and forging, manufacturing industries and industries that use coating techniques. The research undertaken by the Institute helps in the development of the production processes to make products with specified surface microtopography.

Facilities

Currently, the Institute has at its disposal state-of-the-art surface measurement equipment, which includes the following:

  • Optical microscope Contour GT K1 by Bruker (USA);
  • Surface analyzer MarSurf XR20 with XT20 by Mahr (Germany);
  • Universal Mechanical Tester UMT – 1 by Bruker (USA).
  • Rolling-breaking mill allowing to carry out experiments to study the microtopography transfer from the mill roll surface to the sheet surface depending on the roll diameter and at various levels of pressure and tensile stress.
  • Laser assembly for building indicatrices of diffuse radiation caused by rough surface with three measure modes.
  • A number of portable devices for measuring the microtopography of various surfaces in actual production environment.

The equipment used by the Institute works with software products by Bruker and Mahr and some software products developed by the Institute staff and protected by copyright.

All research and paperwork of the Institute are in strict compliance with the ISO and ASME standards applicable to 3D surface microtopography and the appropriate measuring techniques.
